Hey, if you have a partner in band just put them on the wind. If you can keep a steady beat (especially if you've played piano), then you can probably do percussion.

Woodwinds may be easier than brass, especially if you were accustomed to playing woodwinds. I wouldn't put a brass player on woodwinds, though. I'd be screwed if I had to do that.

Probably not a "brass" instrument as in made out of brass (though I suppose if you had the resources...), but stuff like trumpets, trombones, etc, should all be legal. Just no commercially available instrument parts.

I would think brass would be a little more complicated than absolutely necessary, with all the valves and slides and whatnot (you can build a passable flute with some PVC and a drill). But if you can build it, why not? Now, I'll be really impressed if any team manages to build a (playable) French horn or tuba, since those tend to have large amounts of tubing bent into all sorts of strange shapes.

If you can build a French Horn, I want your blueprints. It's a rather complicated instrument.

Building a functioning french horn is near impossible and it would be (in my opinion) kind of dumb to try. The french horn is such a sensitive instrument when it comes to tone quality that a slightly wrongly bent pipe would ruin it! Furthermore your musician would have to be able to play french horn which let's be perfectly honest they're aren't many people who can play it well (trust me I know from expieriance). Since one of the things the judges score on is how your instrument compares to thw real deal I think it would be unwise. If you're going to try some sort of variation on a brass instrument then you should probably go with a trumpet, trombone, or if you want to get more creative, cornet, baritone (maybe), etc. Hope this helps!
