EXACTLY, we used sap from some pine trees and gave the judges photographic evidence

Photographic evidence- that's another thing that's good to do. It's good to have photos during the building process because the judges interview you as part of the competition. Always good to have strong evidence with you.

its a really popular instrument
Yeah, might be a bit of a pain finding all the different sizes/lengths of pipe, though. The allowable range is only around 2 octaves according to draft rules, so at least it won't be a full-sized marimba.

Just make sure you can fit it through a doorway.

I wish we could build a theramin. That would be awesome.

The draft rules for this year (which aren't online) limit you to a percussion instrument and a wind instrument. The official rules might change from the draft rules, but it's unlikely.

If you make drums, you're gonna have to make 27 because you need to hit every note in the required octave. Good luck with that.

Technically, no. You'd have to make 27 to cover the full allowable range, but you'd only really need 8 for the required one-octave scale (13 if you wanted to play accidentals in your piece of choice). Of course, some music doesn't stay within a one-octave range, so you'd have to arrange it, or you'd be somewhat limited in your music choice.
