Re: MagLev Vehicle B/C
It was literally two shorter tracks, lined up and held in place by two pieces of tape, one on either side. The was a small lip at the joint, and it affected most cars saw that made it that far. A lot of cars didnt make it that far; they didnt move at all because the track was smaller than those teams' school's tracks, which brings us back to the other issue.

Re: MagLev Vehicle B/C
Does anyone have any idea on what to use to create a mock sled for the MagLev? I tried foam, but it isn't standing up too well, especially under over 150g weights.
It's the week before the competition... Look forward to seeing all of you at SUNY!

Tupperware. See if you can find one that just fits between the rails, then just position the magnets. Using sand as your weight is a great way to keep it balanced.arugi wrote:Does anyone have any idea on what to use to create a mock sled for the MagLev? Re: MagLev Vehicle B/C
I am a new coach for this trial event and need to order the track. I see from the NY site (http://www.newyorkscioly.org/SOPages/COTResources.html) which the MagLev Science Olympiad description points to says that there are both Kelvin and Pitsco tracks but Pitsco moved their magnets.
Who is the manufacture of the tracks which will be at nationals? Does anybody know so I can make sure I order the right ones.
Thanks.

Re: MagLev Vehicle B/C
I believe you could actually use any type of battery that outputs 9V. (Granted, you might want to stay away from something weird and dangerous like this.) As long as it looks like a 9V and says "9V" on the outside, you should be good to go.ryang353 wrote:Are rechargeable 9 volt batteries allowed in the MagLev trial event in Wisc? It doesn't state they are not. Thank you!
(Never a bad idea to bring a couple alkalines as backup.)
Also, mxz55o, you don't have much choice if you're buying a new track, right? The new Pitsco ones don't match specs, so you have to go with the Kelvin ones. They'll most likely use those at nationals, too--unless someone had an old set of Pitscos lying around.

Re: MagLev Vehicle B/C
I recommend three pronged propellers. These seem to preform the best, however, they begin to get inefficient after their diameter gets over 4-5 inches. Btw, does anyone know if rechargeable nine volt batteries are allowed?

I am mistaken. That was a Car of Tomorrow rule that did not carry over into MagLev.
