Wouldn't labs for atomic theory be a bit difficult to make, though it would be interesting indeed.tmanneo wrote:Wow, I'd really like atomic theory and all that. It would also make for some interesting labs. I'm excited for chem lab this year

Re: Chem Lab C
This is actually my first year doing Scio, but I've done some intense Chem studying over the summer, so I though doing Chem Lab as one of my events would be well-fitted, but would anyone recommend the reference and training resources recommended by the rules manual (e.g. the CD Rev), sorry I'm not exactly too sure on how to prepare because Science Olympiad hasn't started yet at my school. Redox reactions don't sound too bad, I've gotten used to them, but aqueous solutions sound a bit difficult because of the different dissociation properties (i.e. common ion effect) and other colligative/non-colligative properties, though some of the things look pretty easy like determining concentration of solute and molar mass by freezing-point depression.

Re: Chem Lab C
It's redox reactions and solutions this year...
But do we need to know equivalents and normality? Or just molality and molarity?

Re: Chem Lab C
The rules didn't mention either of them in particular, but it did say that "conversions between concentration units may be required for state and national levels." So I guess it would be a good idea to know the basic conversions and their units and be familiar with the difference between the two and their relation to molarity/molality.2win wrote: But do we need to know equivalents and normality? Re: Chem Lab C
So i know this event is focusing on Redox reactions and Aq solutions this year, but is there anything else that may show up on the test?

Re: Chem Lab C
Acids and Bases has a lot to do with solutions so I would have some basic knowledge of Acids and Bases. Probably don't need to worry about Buffers and Acid Base equilibrium.lllazar wrote:So i know this event is focusing on Redox reactions and Aq solutions this year, but is there anything else that may show up on the test?
We had some Acids and Bases stuff on our state test last year. It was pretty much just identifying characteristics of acids.

according to the ever sacred rules, it just seems that you must be proficient in Aqueous solutions and Redox. each accounts for 50% of the score.

Re: Chem Lab C
looking at the test on soinc, i suppose you should know about pH, pOH, [OH-], [H+] and their relationships for acids and bases...
