Nope. Gonna be in 8th grade next year. A bit worried about Disease though, because my partner was better than me, and I will have to find a new one to replace him. Lots of studying for me!

I take it you are from Archimedean Middle Conservatory in Florida?

Does anyone have any good sites on foodborne illnesses? My partner and I were surprised by how specific some of the questions were relating to food preservation on the National test and that's probably what made us fail.

Start with the official training guide on soinc.org. It's the best place to learn the basics in a concise format. You should also study characteristics of common diseases, but always remember that the epidemiological process is the most important part of the event. If you know inside-and-out the process of investigating a disease outbreak, you will be well-prepared for the event.

This year was my first year doing this event (and my first year in SO in general :D ), but I would brush up on the math and the different types of studies. This was just on the test my partner and I took at States, but there seemed to be an emphasis on the questions that required more in-depth answers, essay questions, whatever you want to call them. Certain vocabulary terms popped up a LOT, but I'm guessing that varies from test to test, depending on who's writing it. Hope this helps!

I studied for this event (partially), but I didn't make it to the state team (15 people out of 32 people get in). In NY state, and maybe in other states, Disease Detectives is only competed at states. Next year's focus is food borne illness, which is the same as this year, but the rules may vary. This event has a lot of studying, and is harder compared to other events. It is somewhat related to Microbe Mission, which I competed in at Regionals. Also, you should study the vocab words and most things on the training handout. I'm not sure if all the information fits on the cheat sheet (I actually copied and pasted everything from soinc.org into my Microbe cheat sheet), but try to put the harder information on the cheat sheet, or the ones you think are hard to remember.

Actually, whether a region runs disease or not doesn't depend on the state. I am also from NY and in division B and have disease at my regionals. This goes for other events too, seeing as my region didn't run aquifers, CJAP, and bottle rocket, whereas other regions in NY state did.
