I think the way they did the events is kinda strange this year: we've got
water quality
dynamic planet, which emphasizes freshwater this year
and remote sensing, which emphasizes human impact on the hydrosphere
20 of 23 events have to do with water. which doesn't sound like much, but really... I don't think we've had this many events all on different facets of the same subject in quite a few years.

Interesting, I didn't realize that. This could prove very helpful for studying.

I think for most of the ecosystem events, there can be overlap in the topics. (e.g. Forestry, Forest Biomes for RS and Taiga for Ecology hypothetically)

It does seem rather centered on water, but I believe it's been mentioned before that most of the Earth is covered in water, so a couple events actually fits well with that. I'm not sure why they did it for this year in particular, but it's pretty fitting science-wise.

Eaststroudsburg, I didn't think of it that way. I suppose it's a good point. I do think that they could have spread it over a couple years, though, but it is a good chance to study multiple events at the same time... I'll probably be doing that, as my signature suggests. :D

I don't think it's necessarily by design that there are a lot of water centric events, a lot of events in SO are on rotation. Dynamic planet has always been on a 3 year rotation so it makes sense that it's still lakes and rivers. I don't think there is going to be that much more overlap between events than in the past since the events are chosen so that certain categories are always represented (for instance there is always an ID event like ornithology or amphibians and reptiles). For instance from what I've heard, water quality in the past actually focused a lot on insect related stuff ( which seems somewhat logical given that it is replacing ecology).

are we sure that remote sensing's topic next year is the hydrosphere? because on the official soinc.org website both the newly revised 2012 event chart and the short event descriptions say that it's still human impact.

As one of the few people who have seen the final versions of the rules at this point in time, I can assure you the topic is Earth's Hydrosphere. I'll see if we can update the various things you mention to correct that.
