Think about how the force on the member changes as the angle changes from vertical. Read it over a few times.

You are underestimating your mind's ability to comprehend seeming difficult content. Spend more time thinking about it, ask questions, discuss it with your coach or teacher ...

also, because this forum is not LaTeX enabled, stuff like this looks a lot messier than it actually is.
LaTex is you just need to use the

No i use 1/8 why do you ask?

If your talking about the small size of the edge slots which hold the legs in place while assembling, the edges are two 3/32 squared pieces, i did this so that theres less of a chance of the leg sticking to the edge piece - if the edge was exactly 1/8, the 1/16 cross bracing would come RIGHT over the edge piece, so it'd be a tight situation the way i saw it.

This still works fine though, im open to any more questions.

I'm waiting for my newest tower to dry but what I tried on it was to build it in two peices. I built a square tube for the chimney and then for the base I built a smaller version of one of my bridges from last year. Then I simply glued the chiminey on to the bridge. It seems rather solid. I think if it fails, the problem will be the chimney or that it will tip over. I'm worried about the tipping but my hope is that this design will send all the force down rather than out.

Think about it like this.
Take a ruler, perfectly verticle and apply pressure to it. The ruler will fall but it will take quite a bit of force.

Then make the ruler 75 degree. Apply pressure and the ruler will fall much more easily.

In the same way a verticle piece of a structure is, in general, stronger than a diagonal piece. All they really do is serve as support.

I have read this whole thread, and now I have one question. Why have we settled in 16x16 for the base? I am using 1/8x1/8 columns and I have found that using 15x15 is just perfect. Granted you have to be very sure of your placement, but we did fine. I am thinking every little bit helps right?

15*15 is fine since 14.1 would be where it reaches each side exactly but does not rest on the wood.

I know the base doesn't have to be 20cmx20cm, but what about the height of the base? Is it 15cm or shorter? The judge at our invitational wasn't sure, and the rules aren't clear; they just state that " The portion of the tower more than 15.0 cm above the test base...must passs through an 8.0cm diameter circular opening or hole"

So, if my base was 12cm, than obviously everything above 12cm (and 15cm) would fit through the hole...well, if the tower were sized correctly.
