Is it ever too early to plan for it?

Yes, let's. If there's one thing I hate about Science Olympiad, it's teams that are so confident that they're going to go to nationals in September. Once you get past states, then I think it's the perfect time to start planning for nationals- if you get there.

So, I assume now everyone hates me for starting this thread. I noticed a lot of swap meet stuff clogging up the first thread, so I figured it was best to give it it's own thread.

I don't know about other states but in Illinois, New Trier gets first every year...for the past 8 years. And on the off chance that they get 2nd, theyre still going to nats....and Illinois is actually competitive, not so much as NY, but even there, i'm pretty sure FM gets 1st/2nd every year...

I'm not saying your wrong, i just wanted to point out that for some teams (like FM) its Nationals or...http://www.epicfail.com/images/darth-va ... c-fail.jpg followed by http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-conte ... star-7.jpg.

FM has gotten first every year for something like ten years. However, their reign may soon fall.

Unless you have a crystal ball, no one knows what will happen at states. I've seen teams who no one expected to do well have incredible days. I've never actually seen the incumbent team defeated, but I've seen them heavily challenged by other teams on multiple occasions. All it would have taken were a few points here and there and the team that was expecting to go to nationals for the x straight year wouldn't have made it to nationals.

If you wish I could find you numerous occasions of the long reigning scioly regime being toppled.

Texas is a good example of a long standing team being ousted. one of the teams had been going to nationals for almost 5 straight years and another one of the teams has been going for 8 years. both where beaten

Of course in TX incumbent teams normally only have a reign for a few years, normally no more than 4 or 5, which is about the time it takes for students to cycle through.
