Ornithology ID Practice

Post by amerikestrel » December 13th, 2010, 5:01 pm

This is a new, SO related posting game which I originally brought up in the ornithology thread here. It is designed to help ornithology participants practice bird identification. Rules and directions are as follows:

1. Someone will link to or embed an image of a bird in a post. Birds must be from the official national list available here. Feel free to give trickier images, or images of juvenile or female birds, but please make sure it is identifiable.

2. Everyone else will attempt to identify the bird in the image. When someone figures out what it is, they will reply with their answer (common or scientific name, doesn't matter).

3. The original poster of the image will reply, either confirming or denying their answer. The winner will then post the next image.

4. If the original poster does not reply, a new image may be posted after 24 hours have passed.

5. I realize that it is easy to cheat; please don't. Using reverse image searchers or other tools just ruins it for everyone. If you want to get the most practice out of this, limit yourself to a field guide. Also, when you post an image, try to pick one without a give-away url, or upload it to a hosting site like imageshack.us or tinypic.com.

6. Please no spamming or off topic conversations; keep those to other threads.

7. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if you're not in ornithology, or if your a grad. :)

Red-necked loon, non-breeding plumage, perhaps?

Edit: I meant Red-throated Loon, sorry.

For those that can't see, sometimes they don't work correctly:
