Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering... people compete individually (in teams of fourteen, or not affiliated with a team - I think) in only two subjects out of English, Chemistry, Math, Engineering Graphics, Computer Science, and Biology. I was just the second alternate for the team (I think kjhs was the first alternate, but then someone dropped out and she was on the actual team) and didn't really care that much. I'll probably try harder next year. Engineering Graphics sounds fun.

WYSE is run in pure test format, and everyone does two and only two events, so the playing field is more even than scioly. Also, they divide into divisions, so smaller schools have a shot at it too. I won Bio at sectionals, and placed at state, and my team won first overall in state, so it is fun. Their scoring is actually quite interesting. They give you points for your best five events out of eight, and the team that got the highest point total in an event gets a 100 for that event. All the other teams are scored relative to that, as a proportion of the highest teams score. When the scores are added, the highest team wins. So the idea is to focus on some events, and because they are general topics, it is less effort than to learn something really specific, like fossils. I like the scoring system because the margin by which you beat another team is as important as the fact that you beat them, unlike SO. Also, it is no partner, and that does make it harder.

nah, it has to do with the effort involved, or, more correctly, the lack thereof

I kind of made her join... so it really was a forced endeavor that decidedly wasn't fitting
