Nicknames for Science Olympiad

Post by chalker7 »

Hi Everyone,
Having travelled around the country to work with various Science Olympiad coaches and teams, I've begun to notice different teams and regions have different nicknames for Science Olympiad. Growing up in Ohio, we mostly called it S-O, but since then I've heard a wide variety of nicknames, including SciO, SciOly, ScienceO and a few others. So, just out of curiosity, I'm tossing this out to the hive mind and seeing what you all call Science Olympiad in your day to day experience with your team.

"The nerd herd", by others outside of SO. Usually, we talk about different teams (A-G and A-C), and then SO in general, sometimes SciOly. Oh, and "the geek club". Also used by others outside of SO.

I say SciO, but I think my teammates say SO, SciOly, SciO, Olympiad, or just Science Olympiad or "that one thing we sometimes do after school and get emails about" by the less articulate. An interesting event nickname that has come up this year is WID (pronounced 'weed') for Write It Do It, which has led to... interesting conversations.

We usually call it Science O. This is what it's called so much that our shirts last year featured "Science O" on them rather than "Science Olympiad".

WIN.

On a slightly more serious note (:P), I use "Science Olympiad", "SO", and "SciO" interchangeably. Most of my team call it "Science Olympiad" or "SO".

This forum has really influenced what I call Science Olympiad- most people on here shorten it as SO for the sake of brevity, and I do the same.

"SciOly" is really the only nickname I hear at Mounds View; the rest refer to Science Olympiad by its full name. Even non-team members call it "SciOly," which I find rather amusing.
