Is this a typo? Or am I just interpreting it wrong?
Not that there isn't room for improvement.
It's a double negative.
I can't speak for him, but I'm assuming he meant it to be interpreted as there is room for improvement.

Correct, in this (and all events) there is ALWAYS room for improvement. And we are always willing to consider good ideas (can't promise we'll adopt them though;)

This is completely off topic, but after reading this post I couldn't think of anything but this:

Hi, everyone...
I have a question, but please answer ASAP.
How are you supposed put a thermometer in the beaker when you have a top on your insulation structure?
Do you have to keep the thermometer in the beaker the entire time or only at the end to check the temperature?

You must put a hole at least 1.5 inches in diameter directly above the beaker so you can put the thermometer in the beaker.

The thermometer may or may not stay in the beaker the whole time, depending on the way the event supervisor has things set up. I imagine most places will only have them at the end, otherwise it will require a large number of thermometers to run the event. Check with your local supervisor for a more accurate answer.

Read the rules, they specifically answer these questions.
