States sending two teams

Hey everyone,

Just a quick question -- about when can we expect to know which states are sending two teams to nationals?

Im 99% sure MO is sending two teams from each division this year.

And 100% sure that Ladue and Pembroke Hill is going to win.

The final determination isn't made until early April usually. It's all based upon the # of teams registered in each state. Typically the top 12-13 states get to send 2 teams. And typically there are only a small handful of states 'on the bubble' in terms of whether or not they get to send 2 teams in a given year. The 'big registration' states almost always send 2, and the 'little registration' states almost always send 1. It's the ones in the middle that have around 50-80 teams per division that are the 'bubble' states.'

Yes, the national office decides.

Usually PA, NY, MI, CA (North and South), OH, TX, IL, FL and a couple others send two.

Why wouldn't you just use the numbers from the previous year, instead of waiting to tell us until some of us have already had our state tournaments. That way we know all this as we start the year whether we get 2 or 1.

Some states might grow or shrink by significant numbers each year and if two states flip-flop in size, it would be unfair to send two teams from a state that is now smaller than a different state.

The state director said 50/50. I don't know exact statistics and numbers of teams and such, but I think we're in a three-way tie.

Just today, soinc posted the Division B/C breakdown of last year's registration numbers at http://soinc.org/2012_national_tournament. The numbers you see are from 2011, but the page clarifies that they will be using 2012's numbers to determine which states get two teams this year. The page clearly states that "if your state received two invitations last year, there is no guarantee that will be the case this year." One thing that seems odd to me is that North Dakota got two Division C teams in 2011 but doesn't appear on that list. According to the paragraph at the bottom, this year's numbers will be released by approximately April 1st.

Apparently an ambassador team from Japan will be attending the Division C national tournament in addition to the 60 U.S. teams.
