Virginia 2013

Post by fishman100 »

Alright, you know the drill; post any VA-related info here.

(New) Website: http://virginiaso.com/

2013 Competitions:
Invitationals: Div. B invite hosted by Fairfax HS
Regionals: Charlottesvile (February 16)
Kilmer (March 2)
Stone (March 16)
States: April 27, 2013 at Virginia Tech (it's late this year!)

EDIT: List of all the VA Event changes:
Mystery Architecture and Roller Coaster replacing Helicopters and Sounds of Music
Roller Coaster replacing MagLev, Remote Sensing eliminated from all VA competitions. Forensics and Robot Arm are State-Only events; TPS is an event at each level of competition.
There is an impound on Boomilevers at all competitions (Towers were impounded last year).

Awww :( Did you get a penalty for that?
You should check in the clarifications next time, just in case something is up. here
Remember, states can change the rules. I mean, they have different rules / sheets for some events.

Updated the wiki to reflect the results of the Charlottesville Regionals.

Anyone going to the Kilmer Regional? (I'll be there)

As per the rules, booms aren't impounded (neither are bridges and towers), but all VA competitions require the device to be impounded. Don't know why but I suspect this is to prevent teams from building their device that morning after seeing other devices (being transported, etc).

I'll be attending the Kilmer Regionals representing Lake Braddock SS, but I'm in division B. But since we have boomilever, we might past each other during the test (if division B and C aren't separated).

By the way, do you think VA will be lucky enough to send two teams this year? When is this page, here, going to be updated?

Last year, Virginia was 21 Division B team registrations away from getting a second Division B national tournament invitation, and 18 Division C team registrations away from getting a second Division C national tournament invitation. As such, it is very unlikely that Virginia will receive a second national tournament invitation for either division, given that Virginia's Division B registrations rose by 12 from last year to this year (45 to 57) and its Division C registrations fell by 1 from last year to this year (49 to 48). (See here for last year's registration numbers and here for this year's Virginia registration numbers.)

The Number of Teams per State Wiki page is updated when the official numbers are posted on soinc.org, which will be later in the spring. Also, be aware that the numbers on the page are registrations for combined Division B + Division C, so the order of team registration totals on the page does not necessarily reflect the order in which states will be given a second national tournament invitation in either division.

To add, VA is also limiting the amount of B teams that advance to States this year, so an additional nats slot is pretty much out of the question.

Well those schools still count toward your number for Nationals Slots determination, even if they won't be at States.

I enjoyed the Charlottesville regional last weekend and will be at the Kilmer Regional as well. I'm the supervisor for Experimental Design and wrote the test for Fermi Questions.

Good luck as the season progresses!
