02/17/2013 - 22:15 Are calculators (programmable in particular) to be impounded?
Yes
As a KTH event supervisor, I've never impounded calculators or not allowed students to bring calculators in with them. I'm just trying to get clarification as to the reason for the change, since I'm sure it will be asked. Thanks!
My assumption is that the rationale is that anything that will be used in the event should be impounded (yes, this includes pencils and eye protection). We do get supervisors who, for all intents and purposes 'do not care' and tell students to bring calculators back later when they actually compete, but this was prior to when the FAQ was posted.

Luo does bring up a good point, however. What I would say is definitely do not comply if impound is not given an appropriate level of security. Just this season, we had a case of impound where no supervisor was present, and I could have walked with other teams' devices and supplies without anyone knowing the difference. That is a good case for not impounding your calculator.
Being legalistic about it, though, you will be expected to impound your calculator, so consider getting a cheaper calculator in case you are uncomfortable impounding your 89 or whatever you typically use.

We can't do anything to the beaker (external temperature), right?

No you can't. It's used in the scoring.
Does the ice water get added to the external beaker as well?

No. That would defeat the purpose of the ice water.

Zuul wrote:Quick question about the calculator impound FAQ clarification - what's the reason for having the calculators impounded? We've never had to have them impounded before (exceptions for us were goggles and calculator), since the kids normally have to use them in multiple events. We require our kids to bring their own calculators, and I think each of my KTH kids will need to use it in another event.

Thanks!
We didn't have to impound either, but then again, we almost had to predict for 170 mL at regionals

No..the maximum is 200mL. The range is from 100mL - 200mL. Go back and review your rules.

Are cement glue considered as "expandable glue?"
I don't really understand when they say "expandable glue."

My rules say: "the volume of water to be used (50 to 150mL, in 25mL increments at Regional Competitions)...."

There is a range of 50-150 ml for division C, which is what ychen was referring to. Other posters were referring to the B division range of 100-200 ml.
