I would say air, but you can't really "buy" that. It's already there :P

Two pies. He put them onto his brothers' faces and filled the barn with laughter.

He bought something to suck out all the air, and then bought something to fill it up with again?

The youngest son bought a match and a candle. Then he lit the match and used that to light the candle. The candle then filled the barn with light. I believe that is the correct answer, since I remember seeing that riddle before.

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?

Hehe, only one, the narrator. But 7^0+7^1+7^2+7^3+7^4 = 2801 for the man he met in case anyone was wondering about the math :P
