Open Letter to NYSSO (We need your support!)
Hi everyone,
First off, thanks so much to everyone who's been expressing their support to the difficult situation Ward Melville SciO has found themselves in. For those who don't know, we were recently disqualified from the New York State Tournament due to an administrative mishap. Although it's more than likely too late for us to be able to compete this year (we still plan to file an appeal at Friday's competition), we'd like to make sure the ordeal our team went through isn't for nothing. We'd like to change NYSSO's rules so a team is never disqualified for something like this, ever again, and make Science Olympiad an even better experience than it is now.
To that end, we would appreciate it if you took the time to read our petition, found at http://jakewelde.com/petition, and sign it if you believe that this is something you'd also like to see in SciO.
If you'd like more details on what happened, that can be found there as well. Thank you.

Well, if the letter is being sent out tomorrow morning, there's still time to change things, hopefully.

West Virginia always confuses me, because it would appear to be right in the heart of Science Olympiad competition. It borders Ohio for crying out loud! I know their teams currently compete in Ohio, but I expect eventually that WV will break off.

On behalf of the Ward Melville Science Olympiad team, I'd just like to thank everyone for the support you've shown us. We've all been checking the petition as frequently as possible all day today, and it's been really encouraging to see the number of signatures creeping up by the hundreds at a faster rate than any of us could have imagined. (We're at 2000 signatures now! whaaaaaat) Especially to our fellow NY teams, it really means so much that you're putting competitiveness aside for the sake of fairness.

Re: Open Letter to NYSSO (We need your support!)
There were several articles in the news broadcasted and posted online the past two days about what happened. We talked more or less extensively with the reporters and really emphasized that we wanted to see change in NYSSO for the future, as is stated in our petition, rather than being allowed to compete at this point. For the sake of simplicity and because our situation is a complicated one, some of the articles may have placed an emphasis on the latter rather than the former.

But are there any updates? Has NYSSO responded at all? Even if twenty thousand people signed it, it wouldn't make much of a difference if Miller/NYSSO simply ignored it...silverheart7 wrote:It's almost to three thousand signatures!

Not to my knowledge. I think many people misinterpreted the goal of the petition; at this point, we aren't going to compete. We're hoping NYSSO will be more open to discussion about the policy after the states tournament is over.Kokonilly wrote:But are there any updates? Has NYSSO responded at all? Also, we won't be appealing or showing up to the tournament as a team. The last thing we want to do is detract from the teams that are actually competing.

That's totally fair and makes sense. I wish you guys the best of luck; this is a rule that badly needs to be re-examined.FueL wrote:Not to my knowledge.
