Amazingly, I knew most of the anatomy from various online e=insect resources, but took third due to identification issues. :[

Well, at least you knew the anatomy! :) identification just takes a while to get, and at most competitions, you can't rely on the book because they're timed stations. We had two minutes per station and even that got kind of hard once you got behind like we did because of the anatomy. We also had to do a dichotomous key, and it went okay, but I think we lost points because we weren't exactly sure how to the format went.

We may have had the same test! I always wind up flipping through the book, and we usually have time to spare - or no chance of getting the question.

I got 2nd at state.... at the MO State competition. I bet it was due to the anatomy questions they gave us. Since our cheat sheet was filled with so much info about what each insect eats, where it lives, behavior, etc. There wasn't any space left to put in stuff about anatomy. For example: What part of an insect maintains the balance between the salt and water within it? I was totally lost.... another one asked where the food was stored. Well, we put down the midgut but that was where the digestion took place. It turned out it was the foregut that stored all of it.

They also asked about the types of legs of an insect and made us give examples. We put down "digging" and "predatory", but I guess they said it was wrong. It had to be fossorial and raptorial. But of course we didn't have space or enough thought to put it down or memorize. :?

Basically, all I'm saying, any suggestions so we can place at nationals?
On our cheatsheet our whole back was for anatomy. Types of legs, antennae, wings, etc. would be a good thing to learn. Also learn more about the systems. :)

Definitely study the systems. We didn't place at an invitational due to this.

I was thinking I could cram diagrams of each system of the body, and define all the terms on the diagram.
What are all the systems??
So far, I have Digestive/Reproduction, Trachael, Endocrine, Nervous
Any others that would be useful? :D

I'm not sure where excretory would fall in those categories, but you should know it...just a general question, where are the "ears" of insects? This was on my test and I wasn't sure because I know grasshoppers have them on their legs, but it asked about all insects...and it asked for a specific name, which I wasn't sure of? We ended up putting the antenna on the head because we didn't know.

Okay thanks :D I just added excretory... I am now trying to find others.
I would've just write that they have them on the legs??
