I wonder if you could have everything behind the starting line when the mass is released.

Yeah, my partner and I did not see that paragraph, so when we went to the competition they said the egg was supposed to be right after the line and then we had too much string left so the car didn't go as far as it was supposed to. The brakes weren't activated and it was 64.1 cm from the center of the barrier. Just goes to say read the rules over and over.

Well, cryjea, the brakes didn't activate, we just got lucky it ran out of steam at that distance.

Aside from operator error (setting it wrong, etc) the floor would have a lot to do with it. A linoleum floor is much more slippery than a wood floor. However, since I don't know the particulars of your design, I can't offer any specific advice. Mainly, I would just try to be as consistent in setting it up as you can. Sorry, but without knowing what it looks like (and I'm not asking for a picture because I don't want to make it look like I'm stealing your secrets), it's hard to be a huge help.
Science Olympiad is a tribute to Murphey's Law. This has been proven experimentally.
And no, I'm not a guy...even though my sig says will robsinson. It's a reference to Lost in Space, an ancient sci fi TV show. And the robot is the character who always says the line.
