I go off of the eyes, often times each snake genus or family will have slightly differing eyes.soscioly wrote:Does anyone know any definitive way of identifying Nerodia?

They have keeled scales, so pair that with their head shape/eyes and you're good to go. Head scales are smooth though.Kyanite wrote:I go off of the eyes, often times each snake genus or family will have slightly differing eyes.soscioly wrote:Does anyone know any definitive way of identifying Nerodia?

Their head has this distinctive "ermgafd" expression. It's hard to explain, but their labial scales are going up in a curve.

I'm not sure if anybody has responded to thisAlmandine wrote:Most of the time yeah.
Does anyone have a solid strategy to tell the difference between rat snakes and water snakes?
A good way to identify between the two is remember that rat snakes have smooth dorsal scales, with white blotches, and water snakes have keeled dorsal scales, usually with lines along the across the scales, and the ventral scales have a cool checkered pattern.

How deep do you look into their eyes?Kyanite wrote:I go off of the eyes, often times each snake genus or family will have slightly differing eyes.soscioly wrote:Does anyone know any definitive way of identifying Nerodia?

As deep as the ocean is wide, you are the princess and he is the reptile.Scooby wrote:How deep do you look into their eyes?Kyanite wrote:I go off of the eyes, often times each snake genus or family will have slightly differing eyes.soscioly wrote:Does anyone know any definitive way of identifying Nerodia?

Any strategy on mudpuppies vs. sirens? They literally look identical.

Re: Herpetology B/C
Mudpuppies have 4 limbs where as sirens only have 2 front limbs. Also, mudpuppies have very large fluffy and sometimes red external gills were as sirens have smaller external gills. Also mudpuppies can vocalize.

I thought the vocalization of mud puppies was a misnomer?otterian317 wrote:Mudpuppies have 4 limbs where as sirens only have 2 front limbs. Also, mudpuppies have very large fluffy and sometimes red external gills were as sirens have smaller external gills. Also mudpuppies can vocalize.
