Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
I am having trouble reconciling the 2019 Roller Coaster event scoresheet spreadsheet with my calculations based on the 2019 rules. Here's an example:
Device height = 40
Gap 1 = 3
Gap 2 = 2
Gap 3 = 4
Run Time = 15
Target Time = 30
My calculation shows:
Height Score = 3 x (60-40) = 60
Time Score = 5 x 15 = 75
Gap Bonus = (5 x 3) + (5 x 2) + (5 x 4) = 45
Run Score = 60 + 75 + 45 = 180
The Event Scoresheet Spreadsheet gives a score of 135, not 180.
Please help me reconcile this difference.
Thanks,

Re: Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
The gaps don't meet the minimum requirement of 5.0cm to be scored (3.j), so it's only awarding the height and time points.n2ic wrote:I am having trouble reconciling the 2019 Roller Coaster event scoresheet spreadsheet with my calculations based on the 2019 rules. Here's an example:

Re: Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
I noticed what I'm pretty sure is another error in the spreadsheet running the Centerville Invitational last weekend. If you enter N for crossing the finish line it gives zero for the time score. Not consistent with my reading of the rules. For the tournament I simply said y to that question for all teams.
I've asked the national organization to look into that and post a correction.

Rule 4H says if the ball does not cross the finish line no time score will be awarded.

4.i, but you are right. Darn, I don't think we meant that, but...
...printed rules are printed rules. OK, thanks for pointing that out for me.

Re: Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
Just curious, if this were not the case what would be an alternative? Teams could get super risky with methods that slow the ball down if they knew that their score would not be hurt by crossing the finish line. I think it's a good rule. Unless a large bonus was given for passing the finish line.jander14indoor wrote:4.i, but you are right. Darn, I don't think we meant that, but...

Re: Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
We had a large number of no scores at NATIONAL's last year, was trying to make sure teams could get some score if they showed up and made a good attempt.
Probably different ways to skin that cat, but its set now, so the rules are the rules and that's where we go at this point.

Re: Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
I think not scoring just the time portion if the ball does not cross finish before 2 min is a pretty fair rule as well. They still get gaps and height score even if their timing portion failed. Thus much less probability of no scores unlike last year where failed run was not scored at all.jander14indoor wrote:We had a large number of no scores at NATIONAL's last year, was trying to make sure teams could get some score if they showed up and made a good attempt.

Jeff - you were planning on sharing the laser design you had used for measuring the gaps consistently, rather than everyone trying to use a ruler and eyeballing it. Any thoughts on posting them here.

Re: Roller Coaster Scoring Discrepancy
Glad to share, would it be best to put it on thingiverse with a pointer, or is there a way to post a .sls file on the site?
