Understand that many aren't as openly religious or use their religion to gain votes...

Yes, but that is a politician's choice, just like the voters' choice.

What do you think about religion being tied to politics?

I have some thoughts on this concept, so I'll try to post them in the evening (when I'm not supposed to be paying attention to a MATLAB lecture...).
I don't care if you're religious or not. Religion should not be tied to politics in any way shape or form... The concept behind politics to represent the people of the nation. Not everyone in America holds your religious values or is religious for that matter. This is just showing abuse of the power religious institutions have to manipulate the general population. Similar to how gun owners join the NRA in hope of being responsible gun owners yet the NRA abuses its followers by using their funds and user base to benefit politicians.
I wonder whether you're willing to apply this to other beliefs.

I agree wholeheartedly that the manipulation of a user base for politics is wrong. I don't care what you're supporting it is wrong period. People should come to their own political beliefs without manipulation of organizations or institutions that they trust in.

One of the problems I have with this standpoint is how absolutist it is. In reality, I think everything in politics is more nuanced (I guess almost everything, by my own argument, lol)

Also, what does the NRA have to do with anything?

You imply that religion is just a way to manipulate people for political belief (As an atheist, I believe that sometimes, it is indeed used to manipulate people, but I don't think the average religious person is aiming to manipulate others).

(Also as a conservative going to school where I am, I really agree with your other point, but I'd argue that there isn't really a connection between what you're talking about and the wall between church and state/)

EDIT: Didn't mean to double post, but a new response was made while I was writing my previous post, to which this is a response.

I agree with BennyTheJett here. People should know the campaigns of the people that they are voting for. If that includes religion, so be it. But you as a voter have to understand the consequences of voting for that candidate. If you like most of their campaign but they believe in anti-semitic values, then maybe you shouldn't vote for them.

I agree with BennyTheJet in the side that if people with to do so, they may.
Personally, however, I feel that they should be separated. So often once religion is tied into politics the religion is corrupted and strays from its fundamental beliefs. This has happened throughout history, and can still be seen to this day. For example, the LGBTQ+ issue. Christianity says to love and accept all people - even if they are LGBTQ+ - because all have sinned and have fallen short of true righteousness.

And before people start saying else wise, I'd like to make clear that the people of the LGBTQ+ community cannot continue the way they are going once they have accepted Christ; they must change their ways because they are sin, the same as applies for all people; the Bible does not endorse being LGBTQ+, but does endorse accepting all people.

However, with the current state of politics, attitudes against LGBTQ+ are justified with religion, among many other things not actually associated with the religion, and I despise it.

I support both socialism and communism as their benefits to society as a whole are infinite... That's is when it's not corrupt as pigeon or undermined by the lazy...
