Hi guys! Who’s ready for another year of Geologic Mapping questions??

Remember to hide the answers using the hide or spoiler functions!

Alright, let’s start off small

1. What is a listric fault?
2. How are fault block mountains formed? (like what kind of faulting)
3. Describe the difference between regional and contact metamorphism.

Answers:
1. a fault that has both significant vertical and horizontal movement (combination of strike-slip and dip-slip faults)
2. reverse faulting around a "block" of land pushes it upward, creating mountains
3. regional metamorphism occurs when a particular region of rock is subject to intense heat and pressure, while contact metamorphism occurs when magmatic intrusions recrystallize the surrounding rock with their heat

Yea pretty much for 1 but what you described sounded to me more like an oblique-slip fault. I get what you mean tho. Also listric faults are like normal faults with a curved plane.
Also for 2, I thought they functioned with normal faults (like with horsts and grabens and tensional stress), but I could be mistaken.
3 is good!

Your turn now!

1. If a 1.5 m thick bedding plane with a strike of 270 degrees appears 2 m thick when exposed on a north-facing vertical cliff face, what is its dip?

2. What is a synformal anticline? Describe the arrangement of its strata from oldest to youngest, and its general shape.

3. What are the four main types of seismic waves? Order them from fastest to slowest.

Unfortunate about the hide and answer tags... the spoilers are less pretty.
1. 41.4°
2. A downward fold, with the strata in the middle the oldest.
3. P waves, S waves, Love waves, Raleigh waves (I remember this from Crave the Wave)

Time for a revive...

If a bed has a dip of 15° and an apparent thickness of 200 feet, what is the actual thickness?
"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew 5:11-12

I have no regrets.

I feel like I always mess up these but is it just 51.8 feet?

1. Which drainage patterns forms over uniform bedrock and is the most common type?
2. Which drainage pattern forms over folded rock strata and has main parallel streams, with tributaries being perpendicular to those?
3. Which drainage pattern flows down around high elevations?
4. When a river is flowing, what are the three stages of its movement, and what are some characteristics of each stage?
