Also, teachers, please never give homework with one set of instructions and give another set of instructions in class as a way of telling if people are paying attention in class. Generally kids don't pay attention because they either already know it or they're missing out, and if it's the latter, they won't do well on the test while the kids that listened do.

I am of the opinion that there will be always be some people who won't listen to what you have to teach, but creating artificial grading incentives to do so isn't a solution, just incentive for some people to be more creative with their workarounds.
