As a veteran of forum-based roleplays, I would argue that something like that would actually function a lot more smoothly than you'd think. It really just depends on the direction you want to take, though - if someone is asking as a "dungeon master" or a storyteller so to speak it would make more sense to have a real time session where characters can react quickly to what's happening. If you kind of just want to mess around in a random setting, then a forum works fine because that doesn't really rely on super fast actions. With a forum I find it often works fine for people to post when they can - it's less structured and more open to people with busy schedules (though i suppose none of us are busy right now). However, an IRC-based roleplay could be interesting if you want to do something very in-depth and complex.
TL;DR: Weigh the pros and cons of what you want to do, and just do what works for you. I'm sure it'll be fun no matter which option you choose, but those are my 2 cents
