Re: Green Generation B/C
Let's get this marathon started!
- Identify and describe one reason that a species introduced into an ecosystem may turn into an invasive species.
- What is one compound, other than water, that characterizes acid rain?
- Dead zones are regions of water with very little oxygen. Dead zones result from too many nutrients, like nitrogen, in the water. However, nutrients like nitrogen promote plant growth, and plants produce oxygen. So, why do dead zones have little oxygen then?

1. Example: Zebra Mussels; Explanation: species introduced into an ecosystem can turn into an invasive species by spreading and reproducing rapidly while out-competing other native species. This leads to a decrease in the population of the native species and possible extinction.
2. Nitrous Oxide (N2O) or Sulfur Oxide (SO2)
3. Eutrophication is the process where an excess flow of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen flow into a body of water which causes plant growth. When excessive algae grows, it may block sunlight from reaching deeper parts of the water causing a loss of species that depend on that sunlight. In addition, when the algae decomposes, it consumes dissolved oxygen which leads to a lower amount of dissolved oxygen in the water which causes species to begin to die.

1. Describe the greenhouse gas effect
2. Why are ozone molecules depleting faster at the poles rather than the equator which receives more sunlight.
3. What is a wet scrubber

For problem 2, these compounds are nitrogen oxides (NOX) rather than nitrous oxide (N2O), but everything else is good!terryokay wrote: ↑November 1st, 2021, 3:26 pm 1. Re: Green Generation B/C
1. The Greenhouse Gas effect traps heat. The heat would have been reflected through the atmosphere; however, the gases trap said heat within the atmosphere.
2. Because the conditions at the poles are colder, more stratospheric clouds containing ozone-depleting gases are present, resulting in more ozone depletion at the poles.
3. Polluted gas is sprayed by/ pushed through a stream of liquid that removes pollutants.

Yeah that's basically correct however, for your answer referring to the greenhouse gas effect, I would mention that when solar energy passes through the atmosphere, it is radiated back in infrared light. Greenhouse gases absorb 90% of that infrared light which heats up the atmosphere. Other than that, great job!
