Hey! I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on where to start with Ornithology, The event seems like a lot of information, and I'm not really sure where to start. I have tryouts in a few weeks, and I'm new to the event, but I've been doing Scioly for a few years. Any help would be appreciated!

Just go through the bird list one bird at a time and make a binder with the information for each bird. It is pretty time consuming, but if you pace yourself you can definitely get it done in a reasonable amount of time. If you're looking for specific resources, cornell lab of ornithology is a really great resource with the basic info for each bird.

I recommend to find one that fills any gaps you have in your binder. For me, I found on one nests, eggs, and nestlings cause I didn't put any of that into my binder. If you're looking for just a generally decent one, the wiki page for orni has good recommendations

When the list mentions the Screech Owl is it referring to the Eastern Screech Owl, the Western, or both? Is there a difference...?

I believe only the beak is different (slightly different color) when comparing eastern and western. There might be a few small differences, but if you're finding stuff for your binder, then I'd probably just put info for Screech Owls in general. Hope this helps!

As an ES, I have generally interpreted this as the genus Megascops = screech owls in general (so, includes both of those birds). There has been some discrepancy about this since unlike other birds on the list, it is not really referring to one specific species. But, if it helps, I would focus on studying the genus in general, and maybe specifically the Eastern Screech Owl because there's more information available about that specific screech owl. I have not seen exams asking you to differentiate between the different screech owls, and the different screech owl species should be similar enough to generalize in this way. Hope that helps!

from the official Rules Clarifications from the past few years:
Ornithology B/C
(Section: 2 / Line: 2)

Question:
National FAQ: Under Order Strigiformes, the screech owl is listed, but I
believe that is a genus that doesn't pertain to a singular species. Should
this be specified to a certain species (Eastern screech owl), or should
this remain as a genus?

Response:
This should remain as a genus - participants should be familiar with
species within the genus.

=========================================================
Ornithology B/C
(Section:  / Paragraph: c)

Question:
National FAQ: The National Bird list includes "Screech Owl" . Are students
responsible for all subsets of this, eg. Eastern, Western, Whiskered, etc.?
Thank you.

Response:
Yes

=========================================================
Ornithology B/C
(Section: 3 / Paragraph: h / Line: 1)

Question:
National FAQ: Will competitors be tested on the entire genus of Screech
Owls (Megascops), or specific Screech Owls that reside in the US, including
the Western Screech Owl, Eastern Screech Owl, and Whiskered Screech Owl?

Response:
The focus of Ornithology is on birds found in North America so you should
expect that Event Supervisors will focus on North American Screech Owls.

Binder Re: Ornithology B/C

Post by moconnor214 »

I was wondering what information to put on each page for the binder. Does anyone have any recommendations of what to write?
