I've done fossils before, but not this event. Does anyone have any advice for notes formatting?

I'm in a similar position as you. I started by looking through the rules and seeing what categories I had to have. Then, I read through a few Wikipedia pages and saw what types of information seemed to be consistent. Finally, I scanned through a bunch of the tests available in the test exchange and filled in the gaps. As for actual fact sheet formatting, my fact sheets are usually >=50% text and <=50% images, but it changes based on how much information is available online for that specific specimen.

What are some tricks to ID'ing rocks? I can ID rocks like pumice, obsidian, granite, conglomerate, etc on sight, but they all have really obvious giveaways. For example, how would you go about ID'ing a specimen like this below?

This is my first year doing rocks, so I'd also appreciate any tips!

My group has a question regarding the rocks and minerals we will be quizzed on. We were told that there would be an official list available, but we haven't found anything of the like. Does anyone know where to find it?

The official rocks and minerals list is contained within the official rules, which can be found at https://www.soinc.org/rules-2022

Post by CharlesO3928 »

Hello! I wanted to share a game I've created for identifying certain rocks and minerals at http://sciolyrocks.org.

This event was so fun to study about about but when it came to to the test it was difficult because we were only given 2 minutes at each station.

Was this an in-person state tournament? When I competed in the pre-covid days 1.5 minute rotations were fairly common, and I definitely felt the stress, so I understand.

I have a question, on the rules sheet it says at the bottom, " Apatite, Garnet, and Tourmaline varieties should be identified at the group level, except for Almandine." What exactly does that mean? Is it saying that if you see a variety of one of these minerals that belong in that group you can just say Tourmaline or whatever and not specify the variety? (I'm probably overthinking this..)
