Best air time

Post by Planes »

Has anyone got a better time than 1 minute this year verified at a tournament?

I think there have been plenty.

At SONI we got 1:17 or so in a 24.949' gym. At Regions we got 1:31 in a 30' gym, and at State we got 1:19 in a 24' gym. There is a video just posted on Hip Pocket forum of a Cali team that did about 1:30 in a 25' gym, so there is that.

All of our noted times were first place in those respective events.

Yeah there has definitely been some times over 1 minute at comps, iirc our best time in our 24' gym was about 1:22 when the HVAC was completely shut off, haven't been able to replicate it yet though. We won Centerville with a 1:05 or so and got 4th at BirdSO with about a 1:06.

Here is the video that Coach Chuck has mentioned:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW1E4LqUs8I

For today, 14 May 2022, the Nationals Official Flights for the Indiana team were just posted. Their flights were under an 18' ceiling in their small gym.

Best flight over 50 sec's. Go Team!

Summary of national tournament times. No adjustments for height or bonuses, though of course those were used to determine final placing. I'll note, the best times were not in particularly tall sites. <30 ft
Top time, 1 min 34 seconds
7 teams above 1 min
More than half the teams were above 30 seconds.

Overall, congratulations to everyone who flew Electric Wright Stuff, for a new power system, things went relatively smoothly once the supply issues were resolved.

For those looking to prep for next year, I don't believe EWS will be back. Supply issue concerns. Current plan is rubber power. My usual statement applies. The whole point of these events is NOT building against a particular set of rules. Instead, it is learning to efficiently take and analyze data to optimize a complex, non-linear system. So, don't sweat what next years rules are. Pick ANY past year rules, or build to AMA rules for events like Limited Penny Plane. Learn to build light (Limited Penny Plane is great here, lighter than Wright Stuff planes, but not crazy light like EZB, Mini-stick or any of the really light classes) and trim/fly. Heck, you could continue with practicing against the EWS rules and learn a lot. Your goal would be to match 80-100% of nationals times for that year. That will set you up for success whatever we do to the rules.

At the AMA Nationals in Eagar AZ, Daniel Guo of Sierra Vista put up an incredible 3:19 EWS flight. He nearly doubled the next place time (1:50, Adith also from Sierra Vista).

Great job Daniel getting the most out of your plane!
