 Longitudinal Waves
 If a star is moving towards Earth, then it appears to emit light that is shorter in wavelength compared to a source of light that isn’t moving. Because shorter wavelengths correspond to a shift towards the blue end of the spectrum, this is called blueshift. In contrast, the light from a star moving away from us seems to shift towards longer wavelengths. As this is towards the red end of the spectrum, this is called redshift. So if the wavelengths from a source of light are longer, then we know that the universe is expanding.
 A microphone "listens" to the outside sounds, and a small amplifier generates sound waves that are exactly out of phase with the outside sounds. The opposite sound waves collide and are cancelled. This is a phenomena called "destructive interference".
 Using the definition of a light year, we calculate that it is (299,792,458 m/s)(365.25 days/year)(24 hours/day)(60 minutes/hour)(60 seconds/minute) = 9460730472580800 meters = 94607304725808 km = 9.4607304725808 x 10^12 km.
Problem 5. Give 2 examples for each of the following: Transverse waves, longitudinal waves, and surface waves

Problem 6. Order the following electromagnetic waves based on wavelength (longest to shortest): Gamma rays, infrared, microwaves, x-rays, radio waves, and ultraviolet.

Problem 7. Alex has a rope and wants to flick it so that it creates a wave. What are two things that he can do to increase how high the wave is?

5. Transverse: Electromagnetic, S-Waves. Longitudinal: Sound, P-Waves. Surface: Water waves, Rayleigh waves

7. Flick with more energy, move the rope higher and lower.
8. When describing a wave using mathematical notation in a single point of time, it is common to use the form y = a sin (bx-c). (remember that this is for a single point in time, so it doesn't have time factored into it) What does the "a" in the equation represent?
9. Use the above equation to determine the height of a wave at x=5 meters, with an amplitude of 2 meters, with a phase shift of 0. Be careful; make sure to acknowledge that "b" in the equation has a "2pi" component to it!
10. Determine the refracted angle of a light beam traveling from air to water, with the beam striking 15 degrees to the normal. n of air=1.00, n of water=1.33.
11. Use the above information to determine the critical angle when a light beam travels between the water-air surface.
