Penncrest High School (Media, Pennsylvania) competes in the Southeast region of Pennsylvania, and has been among the most competitive teams in Pennsylvania, as well as the nation. Often achieving top 10 placing at the national competition, Penncrest went to Nationals from 2004-2011, and returned in 2013 and 2014.
History
Formation to 2014
Penncrest's team was formed in 2002, and they were immediately competitive, placing 5th in the tough Southeast region. They were then part of the infamous three-way tie for second place at the 2002 Pennsylvania State Tournament, but due to medal tiebreakers, they ended up finishing 4th. It would not take them long to qualify for nationals however, as they placed second in 2004, officially clinching their first trip.
This began a streak of eight consecutive years qualifying for the national tournament. This stretch included their best finish, a 4th-place performance at University of Illinois 2010.
At the 2012 Pennsylvania State Tournament, their streak was broken by Bayard Rustin High School, who defeated Penncrest by only two points. They would quickly return to nationals the very next season. Then, in 2014, they would finally earn the state championship that had eluded them all these years, and followed that up with an 8th-place finish at University of Central Florida 2014.
2015 and Beyond
Since 2014, Penncrest has remained competitive within the state of Pennsylvania, continuing to finish in the top 5 of the state on a regular basis. However, they have not been able to qualify for Nationals since their state championship year, placing third twice and fourth thrice.
