Syosset High School is a public high school in Syosset, New York that competes in Division C in the Nassau East Regional. South Woods Middle School and Harry B. Thompson Middle School feed into this school. The Syosset Science Olympiad team has been competing since the 1985-1986 season, when it qualified for and placed at the National Tournament. Over the subsequent 38 years, Syosset Science Olympiad has grown as a competitive team, relying on a team-oriented atmosphere to bring it success. In 2014, Syosset Science Olympiad served New York State as the first-ever school to host the Nassau East Regional competition.
The team had steadily improved over the span of seven years, beginning with a 20th place state finish in 2006 and finishing with a 3rd place finish in 2012. Syosset continued to compete at a very high level, placing 5th, 4th, and 5th from 2013-2015. After a setback in 2016, the team recovered nicely, managing to climb back to 4th place in 2019. Unfortunately, after a very strong (dare i say, unprecedented?) regionals performance in 2020, the New York State competition was cancelled due to concerns over COVID-19. Driven by a young core and aided by the experience of several upperclassmen, the team quickly rebounded, placing 5th at the New York State Championships for two consecutive years.
In 2023, the team, composed primarily of sophomores and juniors, overperformed initial expectations, beginning by earning a school-best (at the time) 11th place at the 2023 MIT Invitational. After winning their regional tournament for the twelfth straight season, the team pulled off a stunning victory at the New York State Tournament, and finished the season by placing 12th at the 2023 National Tournament at Wichita State University.
For the upcoming 2024 season, Syosset Science Olympiad will once again rely on their team unity, hoping that their hard work and unfaltering determination will pay off (#syonats24)! To begin the season, they won the Cornell Invitational, causing much excited screaming. They then went on to win the Battle at Valley Forge Invitational to close out an amazing 2023. Next, they took 3rd place at the 2024 MIT Invitational, drastically outperforming expectations and raising eyebrows nationwide (we hope). Most recently, they set a regional record by scoring 37 points to secure their thirteenth consecutive win.
The team can be readily identified at competitions by their stuffed animals, which include, but are not limited to: Cheeto Puffs (a cheetah), Cheeto (a baby cheetah), Rainbow (a lorikeet), Pikachu (a pikachu??), and Archie (an axolotl).
