Talk:Microbe Mission
If you are interested in improving the Microbe Mission page, please feel free to enter your name on the list below and introduce yourself. Joining is this list is by no means a requirement before editing the Microbe Mission page, but it would be nicer if we knew who would be able to help!
The goal of this project is to make the Microbe Mission page as organized and relevant as possible once the rules are released for each new season. Also, if there are any disagreements about the information presented on the page, this page can serve as a forum to discuss solutions.
Past approaches to updating the Microbe Mission page have been to make many subpages with more detailed information, while re-organizing the main page to include basic information. Many students do not truly use Scioly.org as a Wiki resource (i.e., jumping from page to page to understand topics), and it is also quite a bit of work to maintain multiple pages. For these reasons, the current approach is to consolidate all information onto one page and organize it in the most reader-friendly format.

- Microbb. Hi all, I'm Robb. I graduated in Spring 2021 from Stanford, where I studied Biology with a concentration in Microbes & Immunity. Science Olympiad seems to have changed the Microbe Mission event quite a bit since I competed in 2016-2017, and I'm happy to help update the Microbe Mission page to reflect that. Written 9/29/2023.
Some goals for editing the page in 2023-2024 (not necessarily comprehensive or in order of importance):
- Information about the life cycles and functions of microbes on the 2023-2024 microbes and pathogenic agents list.
- Ensuring all relevant information from the now outdated page Microbe Mission/Diseases List is also presented on Microbe Mission.
- Information about 2023-2024 nationals topics for Division C.
- More images of different types of microbes and examples of photos taken with different microscopes.
- Examples of microscopy-related calculations and information about the optical principles underlying microscopy.
- Ensuring all information on the Microscope page is also listed on Microbe Mission. We do not need to delete the Microscope page, as it may be useful for other events (bio process lab, cell bio, optics) and we don't yet have the time to update all the pages for those events too!
- More information about the the significance of microbes in agriculture, food production, and other industries.
- Explanations/examples of how to use dichotomous keys.
- Descriptions of different types of microbial metabolisms.
- More information about different types of antibiotics (e.g., bacteriostatic vs. bacteriocidal), ways to assess antibiotic susceptibility, and the biology underlying antibiotic resistance and resistance transfer.
