Cheese started science olympiad in the 2017 season as a 7th grader and earned the right to nationals in his first year. He competed for Chippewa Middle School (Minnesota) for his 2017 and 2018 seasons as a 7th and 8th grader.
In the 2017 season, Cheese didn't know what he was doing. He got carried in Scrambler and didn't start figuring out how things worked until regionals. He placed first in both his events at regions and went on to state to place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in his events. He made the nationals team and started preparing for his four build events at Wright State University 2017. He ended up placing mediocre in all his events due to many unlucky happenings.
In the 2018 season, he started the year off strong by placing 1st at Boyceville Invitational in Towers with a score of 2180.12 beating out both Daniel Wright Junior High School teams. He went on through the Gopher invitational, Regions, and State placing all firsts except for in Battery Buggy and a mess up in Mystery Architecture. His team won the state tournament again and he earned his spot on the nationals team again.
