smayya337 is currently a junior competing for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, one of TJHSST's team officers, and a lead maintainer of Duosmium. He competed for South County Middle School during the 2018 season and TJHSST during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Smayya337 primarily competes in physics events (go Thermo!) with a bit of inquiry and build on the side. In his free time, smayya337 enjoys playing clarinet, coding, tinkering with electronic devices, browsing Reddit, and hanging out on Discord.
History
2017-18 (8th grade, Division B)
Smayya337 tried out for his middle school team in the 2016-17 season, but didn't make it. He did, however, become a part of the team for the 2017-18 season, which was during his eighth grade year. He got his top two choices - Fast Facts and Wright Stuff - as events, along with one he only picked because his friend had put it down too (Thermo). Ironically, smayya337 ended up preferring Thermo over Fast Facts, and vastly over Wright Stuff. His competition history for this season was decent as well, getting five medals across three competitions (including a 4th place in Thermo at states!)
2018-19 (9th grade, Division C)
This was smayya337's first year at TJ. He tried out for TJSO without actually expecting to get in, so it was a bit of a surprise when he did. Again, smayya337 was lucky enough to receive his top two choices - Thermo and Sounds of Music - plus Wright Stuff, even though he explicitly asked not to do the latter. He put up some decent but unimpressive (in his own opinion, at least) performances at the Duke Invitational and the Charlottesville Regional. A few weeks later, smayya337 was selected as one of the four alternates to TJ's states team, and he was a full member of the team at the Cornell Invitational. He competed in Amazing Mechatronics at the state tournament and Detector Building at nats, and received six total medals for the season, medaling at least once in every competition except nats.
2019-20 (10th grade, Division C)
This year, smayya337 received Experimental Design, Sounds of Music, and Machines as his events, but he switched with a teammate and ended up participating in Codebusters instead of ED. He medaled twice at the CMU invitational (almost three times, but he got lost on the way to Code and missed the timed question), placed 3rd in all his events at regionals, and even got a couple medals at SOUP before the season got cut short, for a total of seven medals on the season. Smayya337 was a full member of TJSO's states team for this season.
2020-21 (11th grade, Division C)
This year is unconventional due to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, but smayya337 has still been able to have an interesting and enjoyable season. He reprised Codebusters and Sounds from the previous year, and got Detector Building (an event he had wanted the previous season but not received). This is also smayya337's first year as a TJ team officer. (He considers it a stroke of luck that he ended up in the position - he's not very good at winning elections.) In addition, thanks to lots of insistence on smayya337's part, TJ is signed up for five invitationals - by far the most in one season in team history (previous record: 2). (He's not entirely sure how prepared he'll be for them, but is excited nevertheless.) Smayya337 is also getting more involved with other aspects of tournaments this season - he forked Unosmium's code to create Duosmium and keep an archive of competition results, and he'll be writing and grading exams at multiple invitationals.

Other Activities
While Science Olympiad takes up a large portion of smayya337's life at this point (oops), he does participate in other activities.
- Smayya337 has been playing clarinet since fifth grade, and is a member of TJ's Symphonic Wind Ensemble and marching band. (Contrary to what some may think, TJ does in fact have a marching band.)
- Smayya337 is a member of TJ's Student Systems Administrator team, helping maintain critical components of the school's technical infrastructure.
- Smayya337 also helps organize HackTJ, TJ's annual hackathon.
- Smayya337 likes to do capture-the-flag (CTF) competitions with friends every once in a while. He specializes in Linux/hack-the-box challenges, though he's not very good.
