Whitney Young Magnet High School is a Division C team that competes in Illinois' Chicago Public Schools Regional. Created in 2012, the team has won regionals for the past three years (not including the cancelled 2020 regionals). It also currently goes to three invitationals, all within the state of Illinois.
Whitney Young attained AA status in the Illinois state tournament soon after its inception (during the 2014-2015 season) after placing 17th in its second ever state tournament, but lost it for the 2017-2018 season after placing 27th at states the previous year. The team is currently looking to regain AA status and improve upon previous state placements.
There are two teams: a Varsity and a Junior Varsity. Although it is composed of 9th-12th graders, it is very rarely that a freshman makes the Varsity team. Contrary to many teams that use captains for leadership roles, the Whitney Young team has a well-structured and organized board, with each members performing various set tasks during the season and off-season.
