Division B Science Olympiad is for middle school age students, in 6th to 9th grade. Out of the fifteen students on the team, a maximum of five members can be in 9th grade. All students on the team must be from the membership school, with the exception of five members who attended the school the previous year. This is to accommodate for middle schools which may not have 8th or 9th grade students.

Current Events

Anatomy

Students are given time to move to as many stations as possible or given a packet while answering questions about the anatomy of humans. It will be related to two major body systems. This year consists of knowledge of the Circulatory system and the Skeletal systems.

Battery Buggy

Battery Buggy is an event that requires participants to design and build a moving, battery-powered vehicle capable of traveling a certain distance and stopping as close to that distance as possible. These devices need to meet many parameters, such as size, total power used, types of power used (has to be electric!), and safety restrictions. The "buggy" must be designed with an adjustable mechanism of some sort to allow for different distances to be traveled.

Cant Judge A Powder

Can't Judge a Powder is a chemistry event. The goal is to teach Science Olympians about the importance of observation of many things in a short period of time. Normally you get 25-35 minutes of using different substance and observe the reaction of the powder that the event coordinator provides.

Compute This

Compute this is a information gathering event you must collect Data from a given website and than must use the info to answer questions and create graphs.

Disease Detectives

Disease Detectives is an event where you use epidemiological terms, and other skills to solve an outbreak in order to find the origination point of the virus.

Dynamic Planet

Dynamic Planet is an event centered on the study of earths geologic features like Volcanoes Earthquakes and Plate tectonics

Ecology

Ecology is the study of how living things(biotic factors) interact with their non-living environment(abiotic factors). This includes the study of the various ecosystems and biomes.This year (2010) it is Grasslands and Taiga.

Elevated Bridge

Elevated Bridge is a construction event that involves building and testing a bridge. The main distinction of Elevated Bridge from other bridge events is that a portion of the bridge must be elevated or raised so that there is a "standard minimum clearance" underneath the bridge, between the bridge and the testing base.

Experimental Design

Fossils

Fossils,is an identification event similar to rocks and minerals, herpetology, bugs, tree, etc. In doing this event, you will become experts on identifying various fossilized animals and plants, along with being able to determine the environment it lived in, its mode of life, how it formed

Junkyard Challenge

In this event your team must prepare and bring materials to build a device on site to complete a task.

Meteorology/Everyday Weather

Meteorology is the study of weather in this event you will learn how to read the clouds and how to intemperate everything that is used for Weather observations

Ornithology

This event is geared towards the study of birds.

Pentathlon

This event is a mix of physical and academic challenges. There will be 5 physical and academic challenges to try and complete as quickly as possible. There are teams of 4. Team members will compete as a relay. Event will occur in all but hazardous weather. A gym, cafeteria, track, football field, etc., are all possible areas.

Physical Science Lab

This event involves the construction of a device that can turn wind into energy and the answering of questions relating to alternative energy.

Road Scholar

Participants are to be able to interpret, collect data, and make conjectures from maps, usually road and/or topographic maps. Competitors must also be able to draw maps. Participants are given 50 minutes to answer questions pertaining to the map. Road Scholar is one of the classic Science Olympiad events.

Science Crime Busters

Students will identify perpetrators of a certain crime by using fiber or hair identification, analyzing shoe prints, tire treads, paper chromatography, and fingerprints. Students will also be asked to identify different powders, metals, and liquids by performing multiple tests.

Shock Value

This event will teach you the basic concept of circuits and electricity and also the concept of magnetism.

Solar System

This event will address the Sun, planets and their satellites, comets, asteroids, the Oort Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, meteoroids, meteorites, and meteors. For this event be sure to acquire a glossary containing many astronomical terms, a list of famous astronomers and their accomplishments, a table of planetary facts (mass, volume, year length, etc.), detailed diagrams of the sun and solar features, and astronomy formulas.

Trajectory

The point of this event is to create a device to launch a projectile a certain distance and get it to land on a target.

Wright Stuff

Wright Stuff (WS) is an event where participants try to make, test, and fly an airplane powered by twisted rubber band(s) for the goal of longest flight duration. The airplane can be of any design.

Write It Do It

The event description for Write it, Do it has been the same for many years. At the C level, it's done in teams of two. One team member is given a structure built from some sort of construction materials, which may be anything from toys (like legos) to craft materials (Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners) to lab equipment. That team member has 25 minutes in which to examine the structure, without touching it, and write instructions for how to build it. Writers can use any numbers or symbols that can be typed on a standard keyboard by pressing one button, or one button in combonation with the shift key, and must define all abbreviations. Then the other team member is given the instructions and a set of unassembled parts (sometimes including extras), and has 20 minutes to try to recreate the original structure as accurately as possible. Scoring is based on the number of correct connections.
