Harriton High School started competing in Science Olympiad around 1991 in Southeast Pennsylvania. As of 2019, Harriton had placed first in the Pennsylvania state Science Olympiad competition 23 times (1994-1995, 1998-2013, 2015-2019) and won the national Science Olympiad title in 1995, 2001, and 2005.

Harriton receives students primarily from Welsh Valley Middle School, however many students who competed in Science Olympiad at Bala Cynwyd Middle School choose to attend Harriton. Students from Bala Cynwyd would otherwise typically attend Lower Merion High School.

Team Information

The Harriton Science Olympiad team, under head coach Brian Gauvin, is one of the most successful teams at the school. Harriton prides itself on its open system in which anyone can join the team and each tournament's competing team is determined by the 15 people on the team who will serve the team best given the circumstances (i.e. ability and scheduling). The team is rather large especially given the small size of the school (currently about 1250) with between 25-40 or so people on the team each year. The team has a welcoming, team-focused mentality, as reflected by the fact that all those on the team, competing or not, are encouraged to come to all competitions. This mentality is also reflected in the team's tradition of going to an invitational with a single team comprised of only freshmen and sophomores.

Team History

Prior to 2020, The Harriton team consistently scored in the top ten at the national competition, having done so for 26 years (1994-2019). Their streak of 16 straight Pennsylvania state titles from 1998-2013 was the longest of any Pennsylvania activity or sport. More recently, in the 2021, the team placed 2nd at the state competition, but 16th at nationals. This marked the first time since 1993 that Harriton did not place in the top 10 at nationals.
