Since the 2012 season, Kansas has had four regions: the Northeast, Salina, Hays, and Wichita Regions. Prior to the 2012 season, there was a fifth region, the Garden City Region, which served the western portions of the state. Each region hosts both a Division B and Division C tournament, but they do not always occur simultaneously. Most seasons, there are 29 state bids per division, although this has varied to some degree. The number of bids per region vary from season to season. Additionally, regional event winners are invited to compete at the state tournament. They are awarded medals but not included in the final ranking.
