EASTstroudsburg13 (me) is currently a student at East Stroudsburg High School South in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania [1]. I am a former co-captain of J.T. Lambert Intermediate School. In 2009 and 2010 for states I acted as a student coach for J.T. Lambert, and I was allowed to go with them this way. Currently, I am the acting captain for the East Stroudsburg South team. I am also obsessed with all things Science Olympiad, including scioly.org.

Other Activities

I do actually participate in other extracurricular activities outside of Science Olympiad. Here is a list of my activities and a brief (hopefully) description:

  • Chess: I am co-captain and currently our first varsity board. I won the 9th place medal in our conference as a sophomore but fell short at the tournament as a junior despite being seeded third. Next year, as a senior, I hope to win the tournament, and have our team finally beat Pocono Mountain East, which has won the conference for 11 years straight now. After Science O, I consider chess my second priority.
  • Scholastic Scrimmage: Kind of like Quiz Bowl. I wished I was better at this. I was captain in my junior year and our team got 5th in the conference. Then, this past year, we ended up finishing second, and lost by 30 points in the finals to Stroudsburg High School. Though I would have liked to win, I was pleased with the improvement. By the way, our conference has seven teams; this might be helpful in the future.
  • Chorus: I sing tenor. I'd say I sing pretty decently. This brings me to...
  • Choraliers: This is our school's select group. It has ~40 members, and we're a pretty good group. We go to adjudications and stuff. It's also the main reason why I now audition for choral festivals, of which I have participated in County Chorus in 2010, 2011, and 2012, District X Chorus in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and Region V Chorus in 2010.
  • Musical: I first did our school's musical in 2011, when it was "Les Miserables". I am currently cast as the Butler in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".
  • Cross Country: This brings me to my sports. I started cross country in the fall of 2010, which was my junior year (a lot happened this year). It was originally as something athletic I could do in the fall, but as the season went on, I began to run decent times. My PR was 20:07, and most of my times were around 21:30. I improved in my senior year, and ran times under 19 minutes, with a PR of 18:17.
  • Tennis: I started tennis in the spring of 2011, again as a junior. I was ranked 9th on our team, and played fourth doubles, mostly.
  • Soccer: I did this in my freshman year. Moving on...
  • Math/Computer Club: We are working on updating our school's website and preparing for the Lehigh University Math Competition and hopefully ARML. The other things we run are the PA Math League and AMC contests. Right now, our school is leading our county, although we're getting destroyed by East Stroudsburg High School North, which is in a neighboring county. I have gotten the highest score in my school in the PAML and AMC 12 for three years now, and I got a 96 on the AMC 12 in my junior year and qualified for AIME, where I got a 3.
  • Spelling Bee: I do pretty well in spelling bees. I won our county bee for middle schoolers in eighth grade, qualifying me for nationals, and I won the high school county bee in my junior year.
  • Geography Bee: I miss the GeoBee. I won our school bee in my seventh and eighth grade years, making states both times. I almost broke the top ten in my eighth grade year but fell short in the tiebreaker (*grumble* lederhosen *grumble*)
  • Envirothon: Envirothon kind of goes along with Science Olympiad in our school. Generally, we don't do well, because it's not highly publicized and nerds tend not to do it. As a sophomore we managed to win Forestry, which was the first win ever in our school's history. In my junior year, I formed a team with a few freshmen and we decided that we actually wanted to work. We finished third in the county as the "Carbon Sequesterers" and won Soils and Current Issue (Estuaries). Our team this year will probably be the "Riparian Buffers" and we hope to win the county competition.
  • Go Club: This is a noncompetitive club where we play the Chinese board game go.
  • Physics Club: See Go Club. We do physics stuff.
  • National Honor Society: In my junior year I applied for NHS and made it.

I think that's it.

Places of Science Olympiad Events

Results from 2006-2008 are from J.T. Lambert, and results from 2009 on are from East Stroudsburg South.

NOTE: Each event will only be linked the first time it appears.

Division B

2006

I was in 6th grade this year, and was not familiar with the intricacies of SO. Naturally, I struggled a bit, but I managed to get one medal. Our team did not reach states this year.

2007

Here, I was a 7th grader. I improved in my studying and was rewarded by two medals at regionals. It left something to be desired, but at least it was an improvement. Our team also improved this year, as we reached states. I was not able to get a medal there, though.

2008

My eighth grade year was my best year by far. I was familiar with all the practices of SO, and was a co-captain of the team. I really mastered my events at regionals, medaling in all my events, 3 of them gold. Our team also improved greatly, and if not for some events where we struggled, we easily could have placed 2nd, instead finishing 4th. At states, I continued to be successful, getting 4 medals, one of them a bronze.

Regionals

Crave the Wave: 4th
Meteorology: 1st
Metric Mastery: 1st
Oceanography: 1st
Reach for the Stars: 2nd

States

Disease Detectives: 4th
Meteorology: 5th
Oceanography: 4th
Reach for the Stars: 3rd
Science Word: 11th

Division C

2009

This year was my first year competing at the C level. As my first year competing with C, I was not entirely sure how I would stand up to the rest of the teams. I managed to get medals in two of my events. My team, however, was not as successful, and we failed to reach the state round. On the other hand, my old middle school team again reached states, finishing 4th, so that was some consolation.

MVC/LVC Tournament

I had never participated in this tournament, as it is only open to C. Only 5 teams from our conference competed, so 3rd is not as good as it seems.

Regionals

Astronomy: 3rd
Disease Detectives: 11th
Dynamic Planet: 2nd
Experimental Design: 14th

2010

This year, I had more experience in C and knew what to expect. Thus, my results were slightly better. The team was also more balanced and competitive than last year, but there was still something left to be desired. The MVC Tournament was not held this year due to weather problems.

Regionals

Astronomy: 2nd
Dynamic Planet: 3rd
Physics Lab (Wind Power): 3rd
Remote Sensing: 2nd
Write It Do It: 5th

2011

I had very high hopes for this year. Our team was stronger and I hoped that we can reach the state level for the first time in school history. Unfortunately, our team came up short. The fact that we attended the Athens Invitational this year gives others practice, but unfortunately I could not attend.

MVC/LVC Tournament

This was my second time participating in this small competition. 5 teams from the MVC participated, and 14 teams were there overall.

Chemistry Lab: 1st MVC, 4th overall
Ecology: 2nd MVC, 4th overall

Regionals

I had less medals this year than last year at regionals, but I was less familiar with these topics. I did attain my first C Division gold medal in Remote Sensing.

Astronomy: 2nd
Chemistry Lab: 11th
Ecology: 7th
Protein Modeling: 4th
Remote Sensing: 1st

2012

2012 will be my last year competing in Science Olympiad and my last chance to reach states as a high schooler.

Athens

This was my first time attending an official invitational. I looked at this as the closest I may ever get to competing at nationals. I performed better than i expected in most of my events, and considering the level cof competitiveness of the tournament, I am quite pleased with my results. Not satisfied, but pleased.

Astronomy: 9th
Dynamic Planet: 8th
Forensics: 11th
Protein Modeling: 7th
Remote Sensing: 3rd

Tiger

This was my second invitational. Although I did well, the two sixth places make me annoyed (the top 5 got medals)

MVC/LVC Tournament

Once again, my three main events are not being held. For the tournament that decides the conference champion, I would prefer if there was more balance: there are no earth science events. Nevertheless, I still hope to do well, and hopefully in college I may be able to write a test for one of these events, which would help to more accurately crown the winner.

My only event right now is Chem Lab, but I may compete in Disease Detectives.

Regionals

I am projecting my events to be at least the following, depending on the team's results from Tiger:

  • Astronomy
  • Remote Sensing
  • Protein Modeling
  • Chemistry Lab

Favorite Events

As you could probably see, I'm partial to study events. Here is my list of top events for B and C, both present and past.

Division B

Since I participated at this level for 3 years, I got to try many different events. Here are the events that I painstakingly ranked into a top 5.

  1. Road Scholar
  2. Reach for the Stars/Solar System
  3. Crave the Wave
  4. Dynamic Planet/Oceanography
  5. Meteorology

Division C

I also have top 5 in Division C. Predictably, most of these events are comparable to my Division B list.

  1. Astronomy
  2. Remote Sensing
  3. Protein Modeling
  4. Dynamic Planet
  5. Physics Lab/Wind Power

Epsilon Aurigae is an eclipsing binary. One part is a white giant, and the other appears to be a star shrouded by a dark cloud of dust. In the middle of this cloud, there is a clearing where the star probably is, so during an eclipse, the system appears momentarily brighter as this clearing passes over the giant. An observation project of Epsilon Aurigae took place from 2009-2011.
